Game Recap: Football | | Winston X. Hutson

Steamwheelers have an oil spill on the river

Steamwheeler nation, this match up vs the Tulsa Oilers was a barn burner. It was a back and forth game for 3 quarters until the 4th quarter, keep reading to find out how this insane game ended.

The first quarter was telling of the rest of the game, after a 37 yard kick return for Raheem Harvey to start the game Kyle Kaplan put the Steamwheelers on the board with a FG early. Tulsa worked the ball down the field to score a FG of their own to tie the game at 3.

Later in the period Edward Vander works his magic to run in a TD, after a Kaplan PAT the Wheelers take the lead. Edward Vander ended the game with 3 TDs along with 70 rushing yards. The sQUAD held on until the Oilers scored a TD of their own, after a good PAT the game was tied at 10.

At the end of the quarter the game started to get chippy and intense between the Steamwheelers and the Oilers.

In the second quarter the Judd to Rudd connection struck, when Judd Erickson threw a dot to Keyvan Rudd for a TD to give the Wheelers the lead, after a Kap PAT the Wheelers were up 17-10. Kaplan once again went perfect from the field on PATs and FGs.

The Oilers came back with another TD to bring the game within one point, 17-16. Jaylin Swan came in like a falcon and blocked their PAT to keep the sQUAD in the lead.

Later on in the quarter the Oilers recovered a fumble for a TD, taking the lead 23-17. Soon after Vander gave the Steamwheelers the lead with a huge 55 yard rushing TD, the sQUAD led 24-23 after this until Tulsa came back again for a TD.

The Oilers made it 30-24 after a good PAT, later on the Wheelers took the lead again with a TD at the one yard line and another Kaplan PAT, sQUAD up 31-30 going into the half.

The second half started with a huge turnover by the Wheelers defense, a huge forced fumble and recovery at the one yard line…was overturned and led to an Oilers TD and PAT to make the game 37-31.

A big reception by Ka'Ron Ashley led to a rushing TD by Judd Erickson, another Kaplan extra point put the Wheelers up 38-37. The Oilers struck again with a TD and a PAT, giving them the lead 44-38 going into the 4th quarter.

This matchup had 12 lead changes overall until the middle of the 4th quarter.

Vander bagged another TD at the start of the quarter to tie the game and Kaplan gave the sQUAD the lead, 45-44 with the extra point. Tulsa scored again and put them up 51-45, from here the momentum shifted in the Oilers favor.

The Steamwheelers worked downfield until an insane, bobbled ball interception by the Oilers for a touchback, sucking the life out of the arena in the process.

Tulsa got into the endzone again extending their lead 58-45, after Oilers DB Jordan Jones was disqualified from the game after a targeting penalty, the Wheelers fought back with a TD by Jordan Vesey to help bring them within 6, the score being 52-58.

Tulsa scores again to put them up 65-52, holding the lead until the end of the game. Easton Bianchi did his best to give the Steamwheelers some momentum late in the 4th with a huge kick return TD to bring the sQUAD close, 65-59 after another Kaplan PAT.

The Oilers then iced the game with a last TD to give them the win, 72-59 over the Steamwheelers.

The sQUAD is now 2-3 overall and this win makes the Oilers 3-2 on the season. The Steamwheelers next game will be on the road against the Iowa Barnstormers in Des Moines, IA. We hope Steamwheeler Nation can make the trip and give the Wheelers some energy on the road against the Barnstormers.
