The Blizzard held off the Steamwheelers in a game where the closer the sQUAD got, the further Green Bay extended their lead. Stick around and read more about how the Wheelers fought hard but unfortunately, couldn't pull out a win in Green Bay.
After a missed FG attempt wrapping up the first drive for the Steamwheelers, the Blizzard got the party started with a tush push TD and a good PAT to make it a 7-0 game early in the first. The Blizzard defense went on to pick off Mike Irwin, leading to another TD + PAT combo, giving Green Bay a 14-0 lead.
The sQUAD worked to get things going and an acrobatic spinning catch by Ka'Ron Ashley for a touchdown, looked to be the fire starter. This was called back on a false start penalty on Ashley, but Edward Vander made sure to get into the endzone by running it up Green Bay's nose to put the Wheelers on the board.Â
14-7 was the score after a Kyle Kaplan PAT, bringing the sQUAD within a TD and an extra point to tie the game.
From this point on Green Bay took the lead and never looked back, the Blizzard defense forced and recovered a fumble, knocking the ball out of Mike Iwrin's hands as he was about to gain a 1st down for the Wheelers.Â
After this the Blizzard scored 2 more times to bring the score to 28-7 going into halftime.
Coming out of the game break, Green Bay brought a polar vortex with them coming out of the locker room. They scored another TD after moving down the field quickly, then the Blizzard caught another interception to add insult to injury.Â
Later on, the Steamwheelers worked their way down the field and scored with a tush push of their own, add another good PAT by Kaplan onto that and the score was 35-14 around the middle of the 3rd quarter.Â
The Blizzard struck again with a 33-yard TD to extend the lead to 28 points over the Steamwheelers. The Wheelers came through for a score on their next drive, Irwin connected with Jarrod Harrington to chop the lead down, making it a 42-21 game going into the 4th quarter.
Harrington had a great night on kick returns, picking up 171 yards on 6 returns.
In the 4th, the sQUAD was able to get things going at different points throughout the period, starting with an insane one-handed pick by Darreon Jackson. That interception led to the offense moving the chains down the field and Jordan Vesey running it in for a TD. Making the score 42-28 after a Kaplan PAT, and giving the Wheelers some well-needed momentum late in the game.
The Blizzard smelled a comeback brewing and scored 2 TDs to extend their lead and make the score 56-28 while making the Steamwheelers' offense lives miserable on the defensive end.
Judd Erickson tagged in with around 4:40 left on the clock to take over the QB role, this being his first in-game action in a few weeks. In this time Judd made quick work by getting down to the goal line in 2 plays, the second being a dot to Keyvan Rudd that was close to being a touchdown.
The next play Judd hands it off to Vander for another rushing TD, the sQUAD went for a 2-pt conversion and Judd connected with Jarrod for an extra 2 points. This brought the score to 56-36 late in the matchup.
Green Bay once again scored a TD to continue holding off the Steamwheelers, further extending the lead the more the sQUAD fought to close the gap. The Blizzard held on, winning their 4th game in a row, 64-36 over Quad Cities. Bringing them to 8-2 on the year and the Wheelers to 4-5.
